Outboard Boat Repair Questions

Boat Repair | Homosassa, Citrus County, Pinellas County, Pasco County“I've had a vibration in my boat (2 props) which has got steadily worse as the season has gone on. What can I do to fix it?”

Work out which engine it is. First I would check the prop, have you cleaned it evenly? If it’s dinged there’s nothing you can do until lift out. What state is the shaft anode, is it missing a bolt or eroded unevenly? Does it come on in neutral or with spinning props? What about the engine bearers/mounts - are they tight? Have you got a spanner big enough? Gearbox oil level or any way of checking (using an infrared thermometer) if one is hotter than the other? That could mean it’s wearing out prematurely.

That’s about all of the preliminary work you can do without getting your hands dirty. If that doesn’t do it, Central Point Marine technicians can help you eliminate excessive outboard vibrations from your boat.

“What should I do if my outboard propeller isn’t turning properly?”

The design of most propellers these days is very sophisticated, so damage makes your boat slower and less fuel-efficient. Smooth operation is also compromised, which could damage expensive engine parts such as seals, motor mounts, bearings and struts, and drive shafts.

This is pretty easy to identify. Look for damaged and bent blades and chunks of metal missing on your outboard propeller. If it looks damaged, it is, and should be repaired or replaced immediately. Take it down to Central Point marine and we’ll get you back out on the water in no time!
